One of the largest pet food manufacturers
Diamond brand formulates, manufactures, and sells a number of labels under their own umbrella. This means that some foods are ‘Sub-Brands’ of Diamond, created to target a different market but manufactured by the same company.
These Diamond-owned and manufactured brands include:
- Diamond Naturals
- Taste of the Wild
- Diamond Professional
Additionally, they use their facilities to design/formulate and manufacture the following brands on contract for other companies. This means that the following brands are co-packed by Diamond:
- Kirkland (Costco)
- 4 Health (Tractor Supply)
- Solid Gold
Diamond does not have a single qualified nutritionist on staff for any of the brands they are associated with. Instead, they rely primarily on a “proprietary formulation technology” (likely a computer algorithm or spreadsheet).
They consult with a single 3rd party nutritionist who is under-qualified. This person does not work for Diamond and may only have to check a box indicating that the computerized formula is nutritionally adequate. The Diamond family of products (including branded/owned foods as well as the brands they formulate and manufacture for other companies) is absolutely massive; much too large for a single off-site consultant to thoroughly review.
This practice is standard for Diamond across their vast brand offerings, labels, and formulas.
Additionally, they do not perform feeding trials or publish research.
Collectively, Diamond manufactured foods make up the largest market share among “boutique” pet foods with a yearly revenue of around 1.5 billion dollars (U.S.). This pales in comparison, however, to the averages of $16.5 billion dollars or more seen yearly from companies such as Purina and Royal Canin.
Diamond Foods across all brands and formulas listed above have been seen in a number of confirmed nutritional DCM cases, with Taste of the Wild Grain Free formulas holding the largest share of those reports.
